"It's a hidden jewel of Sheboygan County," said Lil Pipping, president of the Friends of Sheboygan Marsh, which planned the tower and raised the money to build it. "There is so much to be seen out here but a lot of people don't have access to it unless you're a fisherman and have a boat."
On Thursday, the Friends' board of directors cut a ribbon to mark the completion of the tower and got to climb to the top. Officials say it is the tallest wooden tower in the state. The railings should be installed early next week and the tower is expected to be open to the public by Christmas.
A view from the top of the tower revealed that the marsh sits in a wide bowl surrounded by distant wooded hills. Here and there a farm building stood or a steeple popped out from a stand of trees.
At the tower's base is the Sheboygan River and two old drainage ditches, monuments to a scheme hatched long ago to drain the marsh and turn it into farm land. And far in the hazy distance, in Fond du Lac County, one could just make out turning windmills.
